Expectation is a large ephemeral sand painting portraying the likeness of Barack Obama, located in the Catalan city of Barcelona. It was created before the 2008 US presidential election using a large-scale vector graphic, a GPS topography system and approximately 650 tons of sand.
The work’s grand scale (1 hectare / 2.5 acres) embodies the immense sense of hope felt by Barack Obama’s supporters and raises a mirror to reflect the source of that hope. Obama has awakened an enormous yearning for change that runs deep beneath decades of disaffection with the political establishment.
It was created by Cuban-American culture-jamming artist Jorge Rodriguez-Gerada

A beached whale
A video by Sidney-based photographer Keith Loutit, combining tilt-shift and time-lapse photography. According to Greenpeace, the whale sand sculpture was built on 9 December 2008 on Bondi Beach, Australia, as a message to the Japanese government to end whaling and drop charges against two Greenpeace activists who exposed corruption in the industry

From the first international sand sculptures festival in the Bulgarian town of Burgas
I first blogged about Jim Denevan in February of 2004. Jim Denevan makes freehand drawings in sand. At low tide on wide beaches Jim searches the shore for a wave tossed stick. After finding a good stick and composing himself in the near and far environment Jim draws-- laboring up to 7 hours and walking as many as 30 miles. The resulting sand drawing is made entirely freehand w/ no measuring aids whatsoever. From the ground, these drawn environments are experienced as places. Places to explore and be, and to see relation and distance. For a time these tangible specific places exist in the indeterminate environment of ocean shore. From high above the marks are seen as isolated phenomena, much like clouds, rivers or buildings. Soon after Jim's motions and marks are completed water moves over and through, leaving nothing

The British seaside tradition of building sandcastles on the beach with bucket and spade has long been overtaken by a new art form in various parts of the world - sand sculptures. With the right sand consistency and a few simple tools, the possibilities of building spectacular sculptures are endless
No time to blog tonight either. Sorry

Sandpainting is the art of painting ritual paintings for religious or healing ceremonies. It is also referred to as drypainting. Sandpainting is practiced by Native Americans in the Southwestern United States, by Tibetan monks, by Australian Aborigines, and some are known to be made by Latin Americans on certain Christian holy days
