It must be nice to be the president. In addition to having helicopters, jumbo jets, and motorcades, you get to rifle through the cellars of the National Gallery and the Hirschhorn for artistic masterpieces to adorn your home for the next four to eight years.

As with all of our recent presidents, the artistic choices made by Barack Obama and his wife say a lot about the first couple and what they want to say about themselves (Slide show)

Michelle & The Return of “Cool”

Return_of_cool Moving a couch at The White House

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

There are two little noticed aspects of Obama and his family that I think bode very well for America.

The first is Michelle… The second contribution is the return of “cool” as a viable expression of personal identity.

SENATOR ARLEN SPECTER (on speakerphone): Well, I’m sorry, Mr. President, but with the stimulus bill the way it is now I simply can’t give you my support.

OBAMA: Well, you’re going to regret this, Arlen. I’ve already got enough Republicans on board, so I don’t need you. So you think long and hard about whether you want to piss me off for a vote that won’t make any difference!

(button being pushed)

OBAMA: I tell you what, Rahm, I hope he doesn’t see through that bluff. I really need him on this.

SPECTER: Uh, I’m still on.

OBAMA: Oh, you gotta be kidding me.

(button being pushed)

OBAMA: Hello?

SPECTER: Still here.

OBAMA: How does this stupid phone hang up?!

(multiple buttons being pushed)

SPECTER: Still on.

VICE-PRESIDENT BIDEN (on speakerphone): Hello? Did someone conference me in?

11/23 Update: The ’O’ in the Obama logo

- - - - - - - - - - -

In the first two weeks since the election, President-elect Barack Obama has broken with a tradition established over the past eight years through his controversial use of complete sentences, political observers say.

Millions of Americans who watched Mr. Obama's appearance on CBS' "Sixty Minutes" on Sunday witnessed the president-elect's unorthodox verbal tic, which had Mr. Obama employing grammatically correct sentences virtually every time he opened his mouth.

What do you believe?

Faith_father

The most detailed and fascinating explication of Barack Obama's faith came in a 2004 interview he gave Chicago Sun Times columnist Cathleen Falsani when he was running for U.S. Senate in Illinois. The column she wrote about the interview has been quoted and misquoted many times over, but she'd never before published the full transcript in a major publication.

Audacious

Not_an_arab …”I worship Obama. There. I said it. I sacrifice birds to him. Chickens, mostly, but an occasional finch or starling. I have a shrine to Obama in my bedroom, with a statue of him I have fashioned out of wax and a hair clipping I am told was taken from Barack. I improvise songs in Creole and ply the effigy with rum and spiced candies, and bid it to do my doing. Sometimes groups of us dance naked around the Obama shrine to the insistent tattoo of a tribal drum, and then, smeared in chicken's blood, we have a profane orgy. Obama finds things I have lost, he heals my illness, he protects my possessions, and he curses my enemies. Obama makes women fall in love with me, and gives me the sexual stamina of a goat. Obama sends money my way, and makes me bulletproof. Obama appears before us in the clothes of an undertaker, smoking a cigar, and brings the dead back to life, and army of the undead that even now wait for their orders.

Obama is not God. Obama is better than God, because God is distant and strange. Obama calls us at night and sings us to sleep with songs of hope. And we will all worship him one day, or he will kill those that deny him with a sword made from the spine of John McCain…”

Btw, I just finished reading Dreams from my father & I found it to be beautifully written & heart-felt. This reflective memoir, which was composed in 1995, long before he started running for public office, describes Obama's world views as if it was written today. Here is an early introduction of Barack by author Scott Turow from March 2004. déjà vu

Obama’s baby

Obama_baby Last night I had some theoretical thoughts about Obama -

What would happen if Barack & Michelle Obama decided that they want a third child while they still can (She was born in 1964, which makes her 44)?

They could conceive it this week in Denver, and when the time comes (maybe in a month or so) announce that Michelle is pregnant and is due in June 2009.

So my questions are: Do you think that such an announcement will help him win the election in November?

Will that be the first (legitimate) baby born to a sitting president?

If it’s (another) girl, will it be ok if they name her America Obama?

Jfk_obama …President Obama is forced to hit the ground running after it is announced that multinational forces have invaded Iran from Iraq to take out suspected "nuclear facilities," an attack secretly ordered by President Bush before his successor took the oath of office. John Woo, Douglas Feith, and other former government officials appear on television to explain the constitutionality of this action. General Petraeus is fired when he refuses Obama's countermand and is replaced by a recommissioned Wesley Clark. Obama labors around the clock to minimize the damage and to replace other officers who have resigned in protest, including all of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. "TREASON!" headlines run in several U.S. papers. Obama is lynched in effigy. He sets up a meeting with Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad within the month. Senator Tom Coburn announces that he will introduce a bill of impeachment...

Al Gore's Magical Hummus Machine

Jesus_obama And it came to pass, in the eighth year of the reign of the evil Bush the Younger (The Ignorant), when the whole land from the Arabian desert to the shores of the Great Lakes had been laid barren, that a Child appeared in the wilderness.

The Child was blessed in looks and intellect. Scion of a simple family, offspring of a miraculous union, grandson of a typical white person and an African peasant. And yea, as he grew, the Child walked in the path of righteousness, with only the occasional detour into the odd weed and a little blow…

When he was twelve years old, they found him in the temple in the City of Chicago, arguing the finer points of community organisation with the Prophet Jeremiah and the Elders. And the Elders were astonished at what they heard and said among themselves: “Verily, who is this Child that he opens our hearts and minds to the audacity of hope?”
