Simon Lindsay, RIP

Rest_area_300

A unique Kiwi blogger, Simon Lindsay, passed away this morning. Mr Dodderyoldfart, as he called himself, authored Rest Area 300, Confessions of a New Zealand Road Worker. It was possibly the only blog written by a road worker with such charm, intelligence & humor. Here is a eulogy by a reader-friend.

I had a few beers with Doddery on Christmas 2005, and he hosted me at his house when I visited the north island. We watched a Scottish bagpipe band accompanied by lamas lead the local Christmas parade, and talked politics, life, blogging & literature.

He will be missed.

I too was hoping I'd get to meet Doddery one day. Thanks for sharing the pic, at least now I know what he looked like.

I met Simon in London in the sixties, & we hitchhiked through France & Spain to Gibraltar. He worked as a labourer there for a while, then as ships crew on an old tugboat towing boats to Malta. We never made it to Malta due to various technical problems, only made it to Morocco. Say no more. Simon was a very competant engineer & knew all about engines, even old steam tug engines. We planned to go to New Zealand overland but had very little money so ended up returning to London where we bought an old mini which Simon spent many happy hours under. He liked the spanish way of life, & made friends with the spanish men he worked with. This was during the time of Franco & as his passport said Journalist he was often taken in for questioning. In London he dressed in a poncho & cowboy hat as he was influenced by 'A fistfull of Dollars' movies & again was often stopped by the police. He was always cheerful & made friends easily, always ready to help if needed. I was very saddened to hear of his death even though I haven't seen him for 40 years, I had always hoped we would meet again. I would be very interested in reading his blog but cant gain access to it.Can anyone help? Also I would be interested in hearing about his later life back in NZ. Did he marry or have any children, etc? His father was Alex Lindsay the violinist, & one time leader of the LSO, by the way. He was once a guest of Lord Christopher brother to Lord Bath, the owner of Longleat HOuse in England, which might seem strange now. I live in England still, never made it to NZ, but my daughter has just arrived there instead. Jane Brooke
