The dusk "flight of the bats" event in Austin is actually rather amazing. Both because there are so many bats, and because there are so many people, quietly watching.

Actually the colony in Austin is the largest URBAN colony. The largest colony of Mexican free tail bats is in Bracken, TX which is very close to San Antonio. There are 20-40 million residents (bats in the cave, not people in the city). During summer they show up on local weather radar as they leave the cave at dusk. Looks like a big smoke ring as they spread out.

The colony in Austin is about 1.5-2 million at its peak.
