Red-tailed

Pale_male Re-post: Pale Male, (b. 1992) is a male Red-tailed Hawk who lives in New York City. He was named by the birdwatcher and author Marie Winn, due to his unusually light coloring. He is the first Red-tailed Hawk known to have nested on a building (rather than in a tree). He is known to have sired 26 chicks with four mates. Pale Male's current mate is known as Lola, and they raised 7 chicks between 2002 and 2004. (Don’t forget to browse the archives). The controversy regarding preservation & nest removal

How to train a pig

Training_a_pig Pigs are very smart, and can escape from just about any fencing you can rig up. But they can also be trained like dogs. So when they are piglets, teach them to come to you by shaking a can of rocks and rewarding them with an egg.

Then, when a pig gets out of the fence, simply stand inside the fencing and shake the can. The little piggy will come running home

The last Thylacine

Schrodinger The last Thylacine was filmed in 1933 in the Hobart Zoo where it lived for three years. The Thylacine died on 7 September 1936 as the result of neglect

Cecil, you're my final hope
Of finding out the true Straight Dope
For I have been reading of Schroedinger's cat
But none of my cats are at all like that.
This unusual animal (so it is said)
Is simultaneously live and dead!
What I don't understand is just why he
Can't be one or other, unquestionably.
My future now hangs in between eigenstates.
In one I'm enlightened, the other I ain't.
If you understand, Cecil, then show me the way
And rescue my psyche from quantum decay.
But if this queer thing has perplexed even you,
Then I will and won't see you in Schroedinger's zoo

The story of Schroedinger's cat. (an epic poem, as told by Cecil Adams)

Escobar’s Hippos

Pablo_escobar Cowscapes by Rachael Sudlow

Pablo Escobar lived in a 5,500-acre estate 100 miles east of Medellin, Colombia. He built a bullring, an airstrip, an ersatz Jurassic Park with half a dozen immense concrete dinosaurs. He stocked a private wild animal park with hundreds of animals, including elephants, camels, giraffes, ostriches and zebras. He installed four hippos in one of the estate's 12 man-made lakes.

Today, Hacienda Napoles is in ruins, taken over by jungle foliage and bats. But the hippos are still here

Re-post from August 23, 2004: The wonderful story of Tag, the dog. Click on 'Previous' all the way to the beginning. Tag is a pedigree Chocolate Labrador Retriever - born March 17 2004 in a labrador kennel, Achter 't Dijkje in Baarn. He now lives in absolute bliss in a little town called Ravenstein situated on the Maas River between Nijmegen and Den Bosch.

Named Taggart Achter 't Dijkje in full, everyone calls him Tag. His name was given him by his owners who both work in the Internet industry and for whom 'HTML Tags' are an integrated part of daily life. Play on words such as Dog tags and Tag, you're it! are an added bonus. Although Rachel insists on the spelling Tag, Marcel prefers 'tag', strictly for validation purposes
