100 bucks to 1 of 500 commentators

Five_million Congratulations to the blog! Here are tonight’s statistics:

Total number of hits: 5,003,941
Average per day: 5,578.93
Last seven days: 55,893
Today since midnight GMT: 9,415

Like Robert Gale at A Welsh View, I’ve been blogging for nearly 3 years, and just hit the 5 million hits. Volume of visitors had been noticeably slower in the last few months, either because of some new Google indexing or because people are simply getting tired of this same ol’ stuff. So I need to thank the folks behind the sites that generate the highest spikes in traffic recently, especially Mark Frauenfelder at Boing Boing, “Rasbobbo” at Daily Kos and Caddis from Metafilter. (Hello, Cad’). And to all the many other linkers & bloggers and readers, thanks a lot - I blog for you.

Now, if you read this, I’d like you (again) to post a comment below, just “Hello” will be enough. If I get 500 or more Hello’s, I will award $100 cash prize to one random commentator.

Here are the only rules: The 500 comments have to be posted within 30 days of today. The person who leaves the first comment may pick up the winner if they wish. If they don’t, the second commentator may do so, or the third, etc. If no one of the first 10 commentators will be willing to pick up a winner at the end of the “game”, I will pick one reader myself after drinking a couple of shots. The criteria by which this random person will be picked will manifest itself only then, so don't try to figure it out now. I will post the name of the winner here. The reward will be sent via Paypal or a regular check. Please make sure to use a real email address. Your address, obviously, will never be used for any other purpose. Only one comment per household. NO PURCHASE IS NECESSARY TO ENTER OR TO WIN. VOID WHERE PROHIBITED BY LAW. A PURCHASE WILL NOT INCREASE YOUR ODDS OF WINNING. ALL FEDERAL, STATE AND LOCAL LAWS, RULES AND REGULATIONS APPLY. (By the way, I planned of composing this little gimmick before reading of Jakob Lodwick’s digg contest, so here, I’m late again)

July 25 August 12, 2006 Update: 101 490 Hello's - Only 399 10 to go!

Previous Site News Here /// Digg this post /// Add it to your del.icio.us

August, 15, 2006: Mission accomplished! We have a winner ! (But keep leaving comments here, if you got so far)

Hanan, you're part of my daily routine (along with flossing). I love that you respond directly to comments.

Posted by: Marilyn at Jul 22, 2006 6:31:11 AM

Posted by: John at Jul 22, 2006 7:09:45 AM

An everyday addiction... My brain has certainly grown over the last couple of years of links.
I always was a sort of human linkfilter, my brain is stuffed full of random information, now it's overflowing, dammit.
Keep going, five million people and counting!

Posted by: soubriquet at Jul 22, 2006 7:22:58 AM

Most blogs get boring after a while, but not yours! :)

Posted by: flutefish at Jul 22, 2006 7:38:00 AM

HOWDY!

Do I win if I shout?

I've told you this before, but excellence comes with boundaries. The reason you don't get many comments is the same reason people don't want to talk when they come out of a movie that was so wonderful they're afraid speaking will ruin it.

Posted by: Phoenix at Jul 22, 2006 8:05:06 AM

J-Walk from J-Walkblog.com told me to stop by and say "Hello". Hello. J-Walk links here from time to time, I suspect one of the regulars at J-Walk will figure out the secret criteria for your "hello" contest. Given that the winner will be "chosen" leads me to believe that the criteria is not too specific, e.g. the longest or shortest post. No "choosing" involved there. Hmmm....let me think what you have in mind for criteria that multiple comments will satisfy. You say you want 500 "hello"s? Obviously, I'm not going to sit here and type "hello" 500 times, but I can help you get closer than some of the commenters who have not in fact actually said hello. Hello, hello, hello*500.

Posted by: Tombraider at Jul 26, 2006 5:54:07 PM

Hello. And just a reminder:

The pivot table feature is perhaps the most technologically sophisticated component in Excel. With only a few mouse clicks, you can slice and dice a data table in dozens of different ways.

If you haven’t yet discovered the power of pivot tables, this chapter provides you with an introduction, and Chapter 35 continues with lots of examples that demonstrate how easy it is to create powerful data summaries using pivot tables.

Another reminder: Your Preview feature is broken. :)

You know sometimes when you're with friends and you tell a stupid story? Well, you're supposed to say, "...and then I won 100 dollars." at the end to make it all better, 'cause, hey, winning 100 bucks makes anything better. But I hate lying to people when I say that. Winning this 100 bucks would mean I don't have to lie anymore. And then I can finally live in peace.

I've noticed a traffic slowdown as of late too. Considering that I get maybe 100ish visits a day, a slow day means somewhere around 40-50 visits and those usually people via search engines looking for obscure things.
