Insanity by consensus
Re-post: Sand mandalas on flickr, and on pbase
Construction of the Medicine Buddha sand mandala at the Ackland Art Museum. On February 26, 2001, the Ven. Tenzin Thutop and the Ven. Tenzin Deshek, two Buddhist monks from the Namgyal Monastery in Ithaca, New York constructed a five-and-a-half foot Medicine Buddha sand mandala in the Ackland's Yager Gallery of Asian Art. This process concluded by March 21, and on June 8, 2001 the monks dismantled the mandala and deposited the sand in a body of water. This process symbolizes the transience of life and the ideal of nonattachment to the material world

I went to that Mandala exhibition at the Ackland - watched the guys up on the pedestal work on it - couldn't believe that destroying it was part of the project - beautiful.
